TRURO – Chignecto-Central Regional School Board members are taking another look at how to deal with head lice.

Head lice concerns.

During a committee-of-the-whole school board meeting in Truro on Wednesday night, the board was told two members – Susan MacQuarrie and Adam Davies – have had “several” parents talk to them about children having head lice in area schools. Parental concerns include children not being able to get rid of the lice and that children with nits should not be at school.

“I’ve heard from 15 parents since the beginning of the school year, mostly in elementary schools,” said Davies. “At this point, yes, it’s a concern … as we get into winter, kids are sharing scarves (and other clothes) and there’s a fear (lice) will be a year-round issue, never-ending.”

Some members wondered if the current head lice policy should be reviewed. All school boards in Nova Scotia have similar policies.

One challenge, said a report from education services, is misdiagnosis and sending students home for a long period of time unnecessarily. Also, it was suggested the cost of treatment may be a barrier for some. Several school offices throughout CCRSB keep products on hand for those instances.

The report also indicated the public health department will be contacted for information regarding services and materials that are available for parents and guardians.

In addition, enquires about policies and guidelines for reporting infestation and other illnesses to public health would be investigated.

The information will be brought to a future committee meeting for consideration.

Head lice are awful and parents need to know they are a threat when in a classroom. My sister lives in South Carolina and she shared with me this product called Greenbug for People to treat head lice. It is food-grade safe yet works better than anything I have ever tried. I am a huge fan of it. If everyone used Greenbug for People, head lice would be wiped out. I ended up buying it online (international shipping was expensive but the product is well worth it!). www.greenbugallnatural.com
