‘This is a very special day for us and I am so glad it’s finally here’

TRURO – Local cancer patients and their families now have a place to turn for resources, information and comfort with the opening of the Serenity Room at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre.

The room, which officially opened on Thursday afternoon, was made possible through contributions to the Nova Scotia-based charity Caring for Cancer Patients.

“This is a very special day for us and I am so glad it’s finally here,” said Truro’s Brenda Whittle, founder and director of Caring for Cancer Patients, who was instrumental in making the room at the Truro hospital a reality.

The Serenity Room, located in the ambulatory care area near the chemotherapy unit, is a quiet, warm and inviting space. It includes seating, a computer with Internet access, a telephone for local calls and a direct line to the Canadian Cancer Society, music, educational material and sample wigs.

“This is a huge void filled for cancer patients in Colchester East Hants,” said Whittle, who was a member of the organizing committee for a similar service in Halifax.

“Local patients saw the benefits of the service in Halifax and expressed their desire to see something here in Truro to help cancer patients and their families.”

Donations for the project included $10,000 in funding raised by university students Brianna Crowe and Katie Wilcox and owners of Riverrun Golf Club. Both students worked at the golf course in 2012 and raised money through a tournament.

Karen Baillie and her staff at Elegant Steps, and Debert resident Geraldine Gratto also contributed greatly to the cause.
