TRURO – Area residents will have a chance to meet some newcomers to the community while also assisting in a fundraiser to help with relief efforts in the Philippines following the impact of Typhoon Haiyan.
“It will be a chance for the community to meet some of our Filipino community,” said Ted Powell, who is assisting with plans for the event.
Participants will also have an opportunity to taste several dishes of Filipino food.
The event is set for Dec. 7, between 1 and 3 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church hall 669 Prince St. in Truro.
The cost is $10 with all proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan relief effort.
The Truro area has seen an increasing number of immigrants arriving from the Philippines in recent years and currently has a population of more than 100 Filipino people, said event organizer Maria Agcon.
More than four million people in the Philippines have been affected and upwards of 5,500 deaths were caused by the recent ‘super typhoon.’
