TRURO – A vacant downtown lot is going to be transformed into a parking lot to help during the Christmas shopping period.
Site of former Truro Junior High School to be transformed into temporary parking lot
Truro town council approved a motion this week to spend approximately $8,000 to gravel the site of the former Truro Junior High School so that it can be used for downtown parking.
“It would seem there is not going to be any imminent development on the old junior high property,” Coun. Danny Joseph said, in introducing the motion.
“It would also seem to me that we would garner a lot of brownie points if we could fashion some sort of temporary parking for the merchants, especially in light of the holiday season … because it (the property) is lying fallow.”
Mayor Bill Mills said negotiations are ongoing with a potential purchaser for the property.
In agreeing to go along with the parking request, however, council included a stipulation that if the property is sold, the town will be able to continue using it until the site is ready to be developed.
The lot is expected to be ready for parking within the next two weeks.
