The former location of Athletes World at the Truro Mall has fresh walls and paint surrounding it as construction crews are busy converting the space into two smaller units. The owner of the mall, Strathallen, just announced two tenants for the spaces – Sally Beauty and Wireless Wave.
Construction has started on the former space of Athletes World, between SportChek and Warehouse One, to convert the space into two smaller, separate stores.
Sally Beauty and Wireless Wave are expected to open early next year.
“Our construction started (Monday), so we’ll be at least 60 days on our end,” said Donald Burton, mall manager for Strathallen. “Then it’s up to the retailers, but we’re expecting early 2014 openings for both.”
According to a press release on the new tenants, Sally Beauty is the world’s largest retailer of professional beauty supplies, offering more than 6,000 professional quality products for hair, skin and nails to both retail customers and salon professionals.
Wireless Wave carries the latest phones, plans, tablets and accessories with a goal to offer wide choices and “unmatched expert advice,” according to the release.
With the newest announcements, Burton said that leaves less than half a dozen spaces unoccupied in the mall, including the former Zellers space.
“There are two leases we’re working on now for the former Zellers location but we can’t announce anything yet,” he said.
Back in March, just days before Zellers closed, Burton said that 100,000-square foot space had the potential to be converted into smaller stores.
“We expect to make an announcement on that in the relative short term. We can’t speculate on when that announcement would be, but we expect those retailers would have late 2014 openings.”
Along with the latest announcement, two stores have popped up for the holiday season – the popular Christmas Discounters, as well as a retail location for local Pearl & Daisy owners.
“Pop ups allow retailers an opportunity who are testing the market,” said Burton, adding Christmas Discounters has been popular with customers in previous years.
The manager said another kiosk should be popping up for the upcoming holiday season as well.
