TRURO – A special meeting to get the public’s input into a comprehensive, long-term management plan for Victoria Park is being held on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Consultants with CBCL Ltd. will lead the meeting, which will be held at the Truro Fire Hall at 7 p.m. The firm has been hired by the Town of Truro to develop a plan which will provide strategic direction for the future planning, management, development and operation of the park over the next 10 to 15 years.

“Victoria Park has been treasured by Truro and area residents for over 125 years,” said Brian Kinsman, a Truro town councillor and co-chairman of the Victoria Park Management Plan Committee, in a news release.

            He urges residents and park lovers to attend the upcoming meeting to ensure their thoughts and ideas are well heard.

            “The planning process will ultimately define a vision for Victoria Park that will guide management decisions for years to come,” Kinsman said. “This is your opportunity to have a say in how you believe Victoria Park should be protected and wisely used.”

            The co-chairman said the meeting, and the broader management planning process, is extremely important to helping ensure that what people value about Victoria Park today will continue to be enjoyed by present and future generations.

            Residents will have other opportunities to express their views, including future public sessions and an on-line survey, which is currently being developed.             The 160-hectare Victoria Park was established in 1887 for the benefit and enjoyment of Truro’s citizens. A request for proposals was issued by the Town of Truro earlier this year due to a growing realization by town councillors that a more strategic, proactive and long-term approach to park management is required to systematically address challenges and opportunities.

These challenges and opportunities include: Increased residential development adjoining the park; proposals for park development and use that some may view as inconsistent with traditional uses and values; concerns over forest fire prevention and suppression; loss of ecological integrity; diminished visitor experiences; an enhanced role for outdoor education; an expanded park boundary; and increased efforts to improve complementary management of the park and the town’s watershed lands.

The town is aiming to have a completed plan by the end of March 2014.
