HALIFAX — A man who was arrested for public intoxication and later found unresponsive in a Halifax jail cell has died.

Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team says the 53-year-old man died Sunday at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre.

The man was arrested Thursday after police responded to a complaint of an intoxicated man near a walking path.

The Serious Incident Response Team says he was taken to a jail cell where he was to be held until he sobered up, but five hours later was found unresponsive when an officer tried to wake him.

The team is investigating.
