TRURO – The annual Bark in the Park dog walk is back with a bite.
The 20th annual event, hosted by the Colchester branch of the Nova Scotia SPCA, is set for Sept. 21 at Victoria Park.
The walk is the largest fundraiser for the year for the Colchester SPCA, which found homes for more than 500 animals last year. Last year saw close to 50 participants raise almost $5,900 for the shelter.
Registration for the walk starts at 9:30 a.m. at the picnic pavilion, with the walk beginning at 10.
Participants don’t need to have a dog with them to walk – any animal lover is welcome to collect pledges and come out for a day of fun.
All walkers receive a goody bag donated by Global Pet Foods, as well as a participation certificate. Those who raise more than $100 will receive a Colchester SPCA ball cap. Prizes will also be awarded for top fundraisers, with the first place prize being a pet portrait session with Jody O’Brien of O’Brien Digital.
Some businesses will be on hand, including Paws for a Moment and the Dirty Dog Shop. An SPCA merchandise table will be on site and the organization’s 2014 calendar will be available for $10.
A barbecue will be fired up for those with an appetite, with hot dogs being available as well as beverages.
Organizers are still working on the event and may also include a question and answer session with a local veterinarian.
Pledge sheets can be picked up at the Colchester SPCA on Industrial Avenue, the three veterinary clinics in Truro and can be printed from the Nova Scotia SPCA Colchester Branch Facebook page.
