ARUBA - If the smile on her face couldn’t light up the room, the tiara being placed on her head could do the job.

Melanie Wildman receives her runner-up tiara at the Mrs. Universe competition in Aruba on Aug. 11. The Milton-native is also the reigning Mrs. Canada.

The granddaughter of Kensington's Ida Peppin, Melanie Wildman had come so far. She'd gone from being an overweight adolescent who felt she couldn't compete in the Harvest Festival pageants her own grandmother organized, to being crowned first runner up in the Mrs. Universe pageant in Aruba.

“I bet my grandmother would be really proud of me," Wildman told the Journal Pioneer. "I know standing on the stage, getting first runner-up out of all those countries, she would be over the moon.”
