SYDNEY — The wife of a Cape Breton man charged with second-degree murder now finds herself charged with being an accessory after the fact.

Carla Ann Samson, 37, of D'Escousse, made a brief provincial court appearance on Tuesday in Sydney via video link and was remanded pending the outcome of a bail hearing now scheduled for Thursday in Port Hawkesbury. She was arrested Friday at her home.

Samson is the fourth person charged in connection with the death of 43-year-old Philip Joseph Boudreau who was last seen June 1 in his 16-foot boat in Petit De Grat harbour. Despite extensive ground and water searches, Boudreau's body has not yet been recovered.

Charged with second-degree murder are Craig Claude Landry, 40, of Petit de Grat and Joseph James Landry, 65, of Petit de Grat, who are to return to court on July 22.

A third accused, Dwayne Matthew Samson, 43, of D'Escousse, husband of Carla Ann Samson, is also to return to court on Thursday for a bail hearing.

Carla Samson is also the daughter of Joseph James Landry.

Because of the nature of the charges, the Samson's will be having bail hearings in Supreme Court which is only the level of court with the authority to release the accused.

Cape Breton's chief Crown attorney, Dan MacRury, said on Tuesday he was unable to discuss the details surrounding the charge involving Carla Samson.

He also said the Crown was still reviewing documents associated with the case and was unable to comment on whether it would oppose the bail applications.

Defence lawyer Nash Brogan said the latest charge is yet another blow for the small fishing area of Isle Madame as residents grapple with the death of one person and the arrests of four others. Brogan was acting on behalf of a Port Hawkesbury lawyer on Tuesday who was unable to attend the Sydney hearing.

The Samsons are parents to eight-year-old twins and operate a small fish company in Arichat, he said.

Published reports have suggested Boudreau died after being shot.
