Firefighters take a look for hot spots after knocking down a fire at 114 Maplewood Drive in Cole Harbour on Thursday.

HALIFAX - Halifax firefighters say a major fire at a home in Cole Harbour is all but dead.

Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the two-storey house at 114 Maplewood Dr. on Thursday morning. Firefighters were called to the blaze around 10 a.m.

Neighbours called 911 after spotting smoke and seeing flames climbing the back of the house. Three people were sleeping inside, but were roused by one man’s persistent banging on the door and made it out unharmed.

Fire crews had the flames under control in less than an hour, but the interior of the home is completely gutted. An investigator is expected to begin seeking the cause this afternoon.
