Truro man receives federal prison time
PICTOU – A Truro man will be spending close to three years in federal prison for stealing a tractor-trailer loaded with liquor.
Stephen Joseph Dakota Maloney, 21, was sentenced in Pictou provincial court to two years, seven months and 20 days after pleading guilty to a charge of mischief, theft of a tractor-truck and theft of a trailer loaded with about $200,000 of liquor.
Maloney was arrested in November 2012 following a police investigation into the theft of a 53-foot trailer containing liquor that was stolen from Westville Road in the Mount William area of Pictou County.
RCMP in Pictou County were advised of the theft shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 25 and following an investigation by members of the Street Crime Enforcement Units in Pictou and Colchester counties, along with assistance from an RCMP helicopter, two men were later arrested near the trailer.
The stolen tractor was spotted from the air at an undisclosed location in Belmont while the trailer was located a short time later. About $46,000 of the liquor was not recovered.
Defence lawyer Rob Sutherland told the court his client has had a difficult upbringing, struggling with abandonment issues and drug addiction.
He said Maloney has been smoking some marijuana since his early teens, but his drug addiction escalated to excessive use of cocaine and marijuana after he received a $29,000 First Nations status cheque when he turned 19 years old.
Sutherland said his client was spending about $325 a day on drugs which meant he spent his status cheque quickly and had to turn to a life of crime to supplement his income.
"I know what I did was wrong and I take full responsibility for it," Maloney told the court.
The Crown and defence recommended a joint sentence of three years for Maloney with credit for time served. Since he has been custody since his November 2012 arrest, his sentenced was reduced to a two years, seven months and 20 days.
Thomas Logan MacLeod, 23, of Belmont will return to court on April 8 while a third man will be sentenced on May 13.
