“A nursing home may not be exactly where I want to be, so I’m seeing what else is out there,” said Singer, who just graduated from the Futureworx environmental services technician program on Monday. “I just want to see what other careers might intrigue me.”
Singer, a 29-year-old Truro resident, was just one visitor to Inspirationworx, an event that attracted about two dozen exhibitors, guest speakers hosting workshops and potential employers.
“I honestly just started looking for a job, but before I went back to school I did what I had to do,” said Singer. “I worked in construction, on assembly lines and I went out west about two years ago. Breaking into the job market here can be difficult – a lot of places need more than just a high school education.”
He said his reasoning for taking the Futureworx program was to gain new skills that would be beneficial in finding “meaningful employment.”
“I want to find something that could last.”
With an interest in both policing and the military, Singer had a chance to talk with RCMP Const. Tim Reid, who is working with six-month-old German shepherd Ezzy, a potential police service puppy, Truro Police Service K-9 officer Const. Justin Russell and two representatives from the Canadian Forces.
For Bible Hill teenagers Adele Beals, 15, and 14-year-olds Kaitlyn Firth and Jordan Atkinson, the expo was a chance to start thinking about the future.
“It’s good to start early,” said Atkinson, who said the policing exhibits piqued her interest.
“We want to start thinking about working now to save money for university,” added Beals.
“And it’s good to know what you might want to get into ahead of time,” Firth noted.
Guest speakers included Tyler Hayden, who spoke about living large without climbing Everest, TV host and comedian Daryn Jones, as well as Kyle MacDonald, who gained fame for starting with a red paperclip and eventually trading up for a house.
CareerworksNova was on hand for a resume, cover letter and social media as a means to employment workshop, Saint Mary’s University for a money-matters workshop, and host Futureworx with a workshop on career decision making.
Prospective employers also came together at the end of the day for a networking session with those looking for work.
Among the exhibitors were McDonald’s, Scotsburn Dairy, Holiday Inn, VON and the Colchester East Hants Public Library.
