Request made for $25,000 toward Bible Hill facility

TRURO - Members of the Scotia Pool Society urged Truro politicians yesterday to help them save the Bible Hill-based facility.

Glenda Bower, chairwoman of the pool society, made a presentation to Truro town council on Monday asking the town for $25,000 to go toward pool operations. The facility is facing closure after this September if not enough funding is available to keep it afloat. About 15 people were there in support of the pool.

"The failure to maintain it," said Bower, will result in many people's health and well-being to "spiral downhill ... their pain increases, they get lonely and depressed (by not being physically capable of getting out and being active). It's not a fun cycle."

Bower said while the society is happy the Rath EastLink Community Centre has opened and will provide some aquatic opportunities in the near future, the Bible Hill facility should not be sacrificed.

"I believe (Scotia Pool) can be maintained and be cohesive with the rec centre ... to share staff and resources," said Bower. "We have considerable community support ... a lot of people use it for rehab."

Bower reiterated Scotia Pool is a warm-water facility that serves the needs of people with disabilities.

"The warm-water facility demand will remain high," said Bower, adding "somebody is going to pay" whether it's to help keep the facility open or to address the increased needs in the health system when exercise/rehab facilities close.

Truro Mayor Bill Mills said the request will be considered during budget deliberations, which are now underway.

"We are under increasing pressure to provide funds," said Mills, including for the new hospital, community centre and library, to name a few.

Bower reminded council "25 per cent of users (of Scotia Pool) are from the town."

Colchester County council will take a similar request under advisement and the Village of Bible Hill is overseeing the pool's payroll and bookkeeping until the fall. The province is helping with maintenance until September and the pool society will meet with Truro Bible Hill MLA Lenore Zann this week as well as Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley MP Scott Armstrong next week.

Just another TAX PAYER!! The Scotia Pool is a warm water pool actually very good for Arthritics, Pain Management , post knee and hip surgery. You need this for rehabilitation along with being able to come off narcotics. The Rath Eastlink Center is no doubt lovely but the leisure pool is too small for exercise ,you need space to move about. It and deeper water, so the impact isn't so great on the body. It also has to be available for several classes from both excisting pools along with availability for children. Come on Folks, New Glasgow has more than one pool and they are smaller than Colchester Truro.

And you want the tax payers of Truro to save the Valley Residence, so they don't have to drive to the new pool that the county owns half of. Sounds like Tiny Tims Accounting 101. Bill Mills to his council. "Hey guys the poor people in Valley don't want to drive to the new pool, " can we approve a grant for $25,000 to keep them closer to the Scotia pool"? Question from a councilor " what's the county council giving them Bill"? Oh nothing but we can be nice it's only money that the Truro Tax payers own.

Give them an ultimatum, operate as a break even facility or close down. No more taxpayer handouts. Raise the fees to cover expenses. Find more volunteers to help operate the building and help reduce expenses. This place has been losing money for 20 years. Enough is enough. Time to sink or swim.

Sure, the Rath Eastlink Centre is a great place, but it's way over on the other side of town. During morning and afternoon rush hours, it can be take a full half hour or more to get from Valley to the Rath Eastlink Centre. Many of the households in Valley are dual-income families, and time is very, very precious to them. Also, driving from Valley to the Rath Eastlink Centre during the winter months will add to the risk of some people being involved in accidents which could have been prevented had they the opportunity to go to the Scotia Pool instead. Come on folks, it's a relatively small facilty and deserves to be maintained by all levels of government, or have our locals officials been 'persuaded' to close Scotia Pool in order to divert revenues to the Rath Eastlink Centre, regardless of how it inconveniences Valley residents?

    Remind County Council

Glenda wants to remind Truro Council that 25% of the pool users are from Truro, maybe someone should remind her and County Council that 50% of the Marigold users are from the county and this center does not recieve any funding from County Council. In my view not a good selling point, when you really don't have the support of the Mayor & Council your from and your looking for another Mayor & Council to step up.

might as well keep all the small pools open. The one at the new civic center is no where close to being finished anyway. Not that anyone will be able to afford to go there.
