TRURO - Parking at the new Rath Eastlink Community Centre did not cause as many headaches as some people anticipated on Saturday night.

Thousands attended the Maritime Junior Hockey League game between the Truro Bearcats and Halifax Shipbuilders at the RECC. The opening night of the centre drew hundreds of people to the site by 6 p.m. It's estimated that at about that time, an hour ahead of game time, the parking lot was full and motorists were then directed to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre parking lot across the street.

Less than 30 minutes after the puck was scheduled to drop, about four or five cars were lined along Abenaki Road alongside the Veterans Memorial Highway next to the exit leaving the highway.

Despite the packed accommodations, people in the long lineups waiting to get in the building, and leaving at the end of the night, said there were no major concerns.

"It went smoothly ... no problems," said one person in the lineup before the game.

"This was much better than I expected," added another.

After the game, Truro Police was on hand to direct traffic. Overall, the vehicles moved efficiently without incident.

Curious about two things who did the daily news talk to about the traffic Mr Eastlink himself and why should our taxpayers money go towards paying police to direct traffic when we all new there would not be adequate parking, thats why on friday (the day before the event) the town put up the No Parking signs on each side of the road going to the civic centre

It was extremely congested that night, definitely not enough parking. I don't know what they were anticipating but it was not good in my books. Will the police be there every time there is an event? This issue should have been looked at before construction.

According to Melissa's comment, there are definitely major concerns with RECC parking. I hope this issue does not go unnoticed.

Parking for hockey fans may have been great but for those who were trying to get to the hospital to see their dying family members after driving for hours I cant say the same...How is it hockey fans got to take hospital parking that is wrong on all aspects! Thank god this visitor could walk the distance from walmart others trying to see a family member before the passed may not have been so lucky. I think the town had better take a closer look at where our prioritys lie. I am a hockey fan but this was a sad situation for those familys struggling with sick relatives.
