TRURO – Colchester County residents have been more than ready for warmer temperatures and for many that means travelling to far-away places.

Trudy Parker, a senior travel consultant at Maritime Travel

in the Truro Mall, told the Truro Daily News that Cuba and the Dominican Republic continue to be favourite travelling spots for people looking to get away during the cold Canadian winter months.

“People want to escape the cold weather and some people have a lot of stress and need to get away,” said Parker regarding popular reasons vacation-planners give travel agents for their desire to get away.

“People also go for family reunions and weddings and Florida is big for families.”

Cruises are also a big demand lately, said Parker.

“The last several years it’s been increasing … they are a good value, people like to see different ports of call and the dining on board a cruise is second-to-none,” said Parker, adding, “the dollar value, cheaper packages and having direct flights from Halifax” also make Cuba particularly appealing to many.

And local winter storms tend to encourage residents to take a trip they have been contemplating whether or not to go.

“When there are storms, people who are on the fence tend to make up their minds and go,” said Parker.

Parker said some valuable tips for travellers include making sure passports are up to date, investing in trip medical and cancellation insurance and checking into flight packages on a regular basis.

“Prices are changing all the time … they are changing throughout the day.”
