OTTAWA – Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley MP Scott Armstrong has been appointed to the House of Commons standing committee on justice and human rights.

Armstrong, the Conservative caucus’ Atlantic chairman, was named to the committee when Parliament resumed last week.

“I am looking forward to playing a more active role in our Conservative government’s implementation of our anti-crime agenda,” Armstrong said in a news release. “This new role will allow me to advocate more diretlly for the rights of victims and protection of children.”

Parliamentary committees examine legislation and review matters referred to it by the House of Commons. There are nine members on the committee, two vice-chairmen and a chairman made up of MPs from all official parties. Members are appointed by each party’s whip.

Among the top priorities of the committee is to examine measures Justice Minister Rob Nicholson announced Feb. 4 in Toronto to implement tougher sentences for those who commit sexual offences against children, as well as a strategy to help young victims.

Maybe Armstrong could start fighting crime by acknowledging that he represents a riding with two Federal prisons and correctional officers without a contract for almost three years and that he has been silent on the issue. A backbencher that knows his place as a Harper lapdog. He should be able to do what he does best and milk milk some photo-ops from this minor posting, rest assured that this guy is no Bill Casey.
