Director of Public Works Ramesh Ummat is to become CAO on April 1.
“I think we are going to be well served,” Mayor Bob Taylor said, of Ummat’s promotion. “I think he’s a keeper and that means a lot to us.”
The previous CAO, Dan MacDougall, left the county in October to become the associate deputy minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.
“(Ummat) is one of the most humble, intelligent people that I’ve had the pleasure to work with,” added deputy mayor Bill Masters.”
Ummat came to Canada from northern India 10 years ago and joined the county as an engineer in June 2003.
He has served as director of public works since 2005 where he has led growth of the department to the point where the municipality now does considerable more in-house engineering work, as opposed to contracting out, as it did in years past.
“I think I wanted to be in a position to play a bigger role in shaping our municipality,” Ummat said. “That the next step in progression I guess … In the last 10 years that I’ve seen … we have grown a lot,” he said, regarding staff roles.
“There are opportunities which we can use in growing the municipality and improving service delivery. That’s where I wanted to be, to be able to effect a change.”
Ummat said he is well aware of the “emerging issues” that the county is in the process of dealing with and he believes he can provide a seamless transition to keep things moving along.
“I think one of the things (he brings to the position) is continuity of vision of the council as opposed to a new person coming in and then trying to bring in a change according to what his vision is,” Ummat said.
Two top items on his emerging issues list, he said, are economic development throughout the municipality and further development in Debert.
“We have been waiting for a long time for that economic growth to occur. It has not happened. And that’s one of the areas of focus that I identify.”
