ANTIGONISH, N.S. — About 400 faculty and support staff at St. Francis Xavier University are on strike.

Union president Peter McInnis says the strike went ahead with no last minute contact with the administration at the school located in Antigonish, N.S.

McInnis says pickets have gone up at five locations around the campus and will work in four shifts between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

He says the strike action was a last resort after eight months of contract negotiations.

The faculty association has been without a contract since June and McInnis says it can’t accept the university’s latest offer because the raises on the table are well below the cost-of-living.

A school spokeswoman has confirmed in an email that the strike has prompted the university to postpone classes.

I agree with R. I work for a non-profit organization as an administrative Assstant and we have not had a cost of living raise for atleast the last 4 years. I sure as heck don't make what these people are making. Maybe they should live within their means because if you can't live off of 85 k a year then there is something seriously wrong. I hope you don't ever lose your job and have to find out! jmo

The wages are well below the cost of living? Maybe they should look at the facts. Most administrators within the school make less than 30K a year and receive an annual pay increase of 1% versus their wages of well over 85K on average with an annual increase of 3%. Look at what is being offered to this union and its not enough for them. The offer currently presented goes well beyond the institutions means and will result in layoffs and cutbacks on the administration side. A 6.9% raise would be welcomed in the real world!

What a disgrace!!!! You are taking into consideration those who pay your salaries - the STUDENTS. You should take into consideration that you actually have a job - you are among the lucky ones - and you want more. I am a member of a union, however, I don't think educators, nurses, police should have the right to strike. There are only two groups that suffer while on strike - the students (your customers) and the strikers - you don't see the heads of your respective unions giving up their salary to walk a picket line. Stop being so selfish, put down your pickets, and get back to work. These students have their futures ahead of them and you are not helping.
