TRURO – A non-profit organization dedicated to providing a broad range of counselling services for youth, adults and children is undergoing a name change.
Archway Counselling Association is the new name for what most in our community have called Christian Counselling Ministries since 1994.
During a recent meeting, the board of directors agreed to rename the non-profit organization, which includes the operations of Archway Counselling and the Slate Youth Centre.
“The reason for the name change is very simple; unfortunately, the words "Christian" and "ministries" are misunderstood in our society today and put up road blocks,” said Brian Schrock, executive director, in a new release.
“Some in the public thought that the services of this association were only open to those who were Christian, which has never been the case.
He said that belief was in direct conflict with the organization’s mission, which is to provide professional counselling services to anyone, at affordable rates and on a timely basis.
Archway Counselling Association exists due to the support of the individuals, churches and businesses of the Truro and area community who donate regularly to offset the cost of the counselling services and help keep the costs affordable to everyone.
Schrock said it is important to note the mission statement, vision, philosophy of care and practice will remain the same.
“This is only a name change,” he said. “It is the organization’s hope that this change in the name will position them to be able to more effectively serve the people of the community.”
There are four professional counsellors providing individual, couple, and family counselling for adults, youth and children. For the past six years Slate Youth Centre has been a gathering place for the youth in our community. The various programs are offered at no, or low, cost to the teens.
Archway Place, the home of the association, is located at 883 Prince Street in Truro. Contact them at 893-3991 for more information.
