TRURO - A new draft bylaw regarding sewer use in Colchester County was introduced to council Thursday night.

If approved, the new sewer bylaw would ban radioactive wastewater from being disposed into the municipal system if it is "in excess of concentrations greater than those permitted for release into the environment by federal regulations and provincial regulations."

And, that potentially could mean that a request from Atlantic Industrial Services (AIS) in Debert to dispose of wastewater containing naturally occurring radioactive material into the county's sewer system will not be granted.

The wastewater, which is stored in holding ponds at AIS, is from fracking activities that occurred in Hants County.
