Halifax-Chebucto MLA will not run in next election

HALIFAX – Premier Darrell Dexter thanked Howard Epstein for his 15 years of hard work and dedication as the MLA for Halifax Chebucto and shared best wishes on his retirement from the public service.

Epstein announced Tuesday, he will not run in the next provincial election.

"Howard is a very dear member of our caucus family and he will be missed around that table," Dexter said in a news release. "You could always depend on Howard to speak up on the issues closest to his heart, whether that was the environment, community affairs or Nova Scotia's most vulnerable citizens.

"But those who got Howard's closest attention were always his constituents. The people and families in Halifax Chebucto are saying goodbye to a fighter who always made their needs and concerns a priority, both in opposition and later in government."

A lawyer and part-time law professor, Epstein was first elected to the provincial legislature in 1998. He was re-elected in 1999, 2003, 2006 and 2009.

Before becoming an MLA, Epstein served as a Halifax city councillor, starting in 1994. He was re-elected to the amalgamated Halifax Regional Municipal Council in 1995.

"Howard has dedicated close to two decades of his life to making life better for Nova Scotians and their families," Dexter said. "I understand how he would now want to spend more of that time with his own family and friends, and I wish him all the best."

Well we see what was inevitable. When one card falls the whole house starts to crumble. Best of luck in the election Mr. Premier.

Well I guess that says it all, "Bookworm" Epstein has seen the light, he does not want to be part of the largest house cleaning next to the avalanche that pushed Sir Rodney all the way from Halifax to his current hideout in Mabou. As one after the other desert Darrell for the pension route, or hopefully maybe a stint as greeters at their local Walmart, I am hoping to hear of the departure of the three amigo's who make up the N.D.P. troika here in Pictou County. Maybe that is just wishful thinking on my part, but what have we got to lose? The new premier and I am picking Stephen MacNeil will probably get his majority within the confines of HRM and CBRM, if we hope to have any influence at all at the cabinet table we are going to have to elect members from the governing party. We have just come through four years of having two local members siting around with the movers and shakers, have you noticed any improvement in the overall situation as a result? I mean the wellness center is built, the jail is being built, and the school will be the next item to be built, after that what? Exactly ! Remember Mr MacNeil came out in favor of Maritime steel that is if it is not too late to save it. As far as Dawoo goes might as well just wave goodby to the $60 million, at least Port Hawksbury got some jobs for their money.
