Parking fees were supposed to go into effect on Jan. 2 but “unforeseen delays” in finalizing work on the gates and the technology used to operate the parking system over the Christmas holidays has meant a few weeks of additional free parking for visitors to the new hospital, health authority spokeswoman Krista Wood said.
Work is continuing on the gates, she said, and training on the new system is expected to begin this week. Paid parking will begin once training is complete although a confirmed date has not been set.
The new rates will be $2 for the first hour plus 25 cents for each additional 15 minutes up to a daily maximum of $5 per vehicle.
A discounted weekly rate will be available for long-term visitors and frequent outpatients.
Visitors will be able to pay with cash, Interac or credit card at kiosks in the emergency room and inside the health centre's front entrance, or with credit card at the parking lot exits.
