TRURO – A public meeting will be held next week to discuss the future of the former Alice Street Elementary School site.

Truro town council confirmed at its regular monthly meeting on Monday that the meeting, which is open to everyone, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in the town council chambers on Prince Street.

According to the town’s planning and development services department, the purpose of the meeting is to receive feedback and direction from the community on plans by Meech Holdings Limited to redevelop the site of the old school.

Coun. Greg MacArthur told the Truro Daily News having community input has always been intended.

“We told the residents they would be involved,” said MacArthur, confirming a conceptual plan for the redevelopment of the property will be presented to council and the public by the planning department and developer Ron Meech.

“It could be that homes go there. We don’t know yet. Green space will be part of it, though,” said MacArthur, adding, “it’s been the last three years we’ve been working on it.”

The elementary school closed in June of 2008.
