Hwy 104 reopened near James River

UPDATE 11:39 a.m. : JAMES RIVER – Highway 104 near Exit 30 is reopened to traffic following a collision between two transport trucks early Monday morning. RCMP closed the highway for almost 10 hours to investigate the cause of the accident.

Cpl. Shannon Fear of Antigonish RCMP confirmed that the highway had reopened around 11 a.m.

RCMP issued a press release that stated the motor vehicle collision happened at 1:30 a.m. Monday.

“Antigonish RCMP responded to a collision between two transport trucks. One driver was treated and released from St. Martha's Regional Hospital with minor injuries. The second driver was not injured,” the release stated. “A tanker filled with a flammable substance was involved in the collision. Fire officials and a Hazmat team responded but the investigation confirmed  there are no leaks.”

The release also stated that roads were snow covered and slippery at the time of the collision and the conditions are considered a contributing factor to the accident.

Traffic was re-routed from the 104 onto Highway 4 at Brierly Brook during the closure.

The collision between the two transport trucks is still under investigation and no charges were laid by the time the press release was issued

Highway 104, near Exit 30 in James River, is closed in both directions due to a motor vehicle collision.

Detours using the on and off ramps at Exit 30 are in place. The highway is expected to be closed for 8-10 hours.
