Hilden man pleads guilty to assaulting son

TRURO - A 25-year-old Hilden man has pleaded guilty to assaulting his son almost two years ago.

James Joseph Pumphrey, of 1594 Truro Rd., re-elected provincial court and maintained a not guilty plea to a charge of aggravated assault, however, pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault, as well as a new charge of failing to provide the necessities of life.

Pumphrey was arrested on April 1, 2011, after his then two-month-old son was taken to Colchester Regional Hospital with life-threatening brain and rib injuries. The child was immediately transferred to the IWK Children's Hospital in Halifax.

The incidents were to have occurred between March 6 and 23.

A statement of facts and counsel's position on sentencing are to be submitted to the court by Feb. 8.

A pre-sentence report has been requested.

Pumphrey will return to provincial court for sentencing on Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m.

The Hilden man was also charged with theft under $5,000 from Feb. 8, 2012, and breaching a condition of his recognizance on June 9, 2011. He pleaded guilty to both charges and will be sentenced on the same day.
