TRURO - Colchester County residents can get a little taste of China while contributing to a good cause.

A group of Chinese students from Dalhousie Agricultural Campus have organized a fundraising event Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at St. David's Church to help raise funds for a scholarship in honour of their friend Zhuhui Ye (Kevin), a fellow Dalhousie student who died in a drowning accident at Dollar Lake in September.

"We're really excited," Xiang Lin (Shawn), a close friend of Kevin's who is helping to organize the event, said. "He would have liked us to do something like this. I don't know what else I could do to remember him. He was my best friend. We hung out all the time."

There is no admission for the event, however, organizers are hoping for donations to the cause. Those interested in attending are asked to contact organizers at 893-6905 for planning purposes.

The evening will feature authentic Chinese food and entertainment all prepared by Chinese students from Dalhousie Agricultural Campus.

A meal with noodles, fried rice and several other dishes along with tea and dessert will be served at the beginning of the evening followed by an information session on China, a sing-along and introductions to calligraphy and tai-chi, among other activities.

Shawn said the goal of the group is to raise enough money to present a scholarship to a student this year and to continue to do so for several years to come.

Students have already planted a tree at the campus in Kevin's honour.

With about 100 Chinese students attending the Dalhousie campus, Shawn said he also hopes to bring awareness about their culture to area residents.

"We hope a lot of people come," the 22-year-old said. "Because a lot of people don't really know there are even Chinese students here. We'd like them to get to know us."
