FIVE ISLANDS - A 50k run in support of the Five Islands outdoor rink has now more than tripled the original goal.

Wade Eagles had originally hoped to raise $1,000 with the money going toward upgrading the rink - specifically to the purchase of boards for the exterior.

The tally raised now stands at more than $3,100.

"I am overwhelmed to know that so many people care about our project," said Eagles, who started near the Glenholme Auto Salvage at 8 a.m. and made his way to the rink.

Although Eagles, his family and the Five Islands Athletic Association (who looks after the rink) had anticipated success, no one imagined the event being as popular as it turned out to be.

"It has strengthened everyone's sense of community and given us a desire to continue on with other projects as well," he said.
