TRURO - The official name of the new civic centre in Truro will be revealed this morning.

Ignite the Spirit campaign chair Jon Stanfield will make the announcement to media and project-related people at 10:30 a.m. The gathering is not open to the public, but details of the announcement will be available immediately following the event.

The $48-milion Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre was originally scheduled to open this fall, with membership programs beginning in January. However, delays, including peeling paint, have forced the opening to be delayed. Officials will announce a new opening date at a later time, but sources have indicated to the Truro Daily News that it will after Christmas at the earliest.

When it opens, the civic centre will include a 2,500-seat arena with a NHL-sized ice surface, an eight-lane, 25-metre, swimming pool and smaller therapeutic pool, a climbing wall, fitness centre and community meeting space.

Like it or not, this sportsplex (er, should I say civic centre) was hatched when Colchester wanted the Canada winter games and we are stuck with it. But don't discredit the private investors. There may be a balance sheet somewhere, but they could have used the money to retire in Florida rather than giving it back to the community.

Yawn. Who cares any more ??? Too much money and too far behind schedule. This whole project has stunk of politics since it hit the drawing board. Not only is it going to cost the taxpayers $48 million, have you seen the prices for the fitness facilites? Compare them to the costs the NSCC Wellness Center was charging and you'll be in for a shock. Too bad the name is already chosen - I'd vote for the "Taxpayer Will Pay And Pay For Something They Never Asked For Civic Centre".
