TRURO - Three local community groups have each received funding from the province for facility upgrades.
The recipients are Maggies Place Family Resource Centre in Truro, the Truro and District Lion's Club and Deuville's Rink in Salmon River.
Truro-Bible Hill MLA Lenore Zann made the funding announcements through a news release issued Friday.
"Both Maggie's Place and the Lions Club provide invaluable assistance to many in our community," Zann said. "I am very happy to support them with this funding so they can continue the great work they do."
The funding is through the Department of Communities Culture and Heritage and is intended to provide for improvements to each of the three facilities in question.
Maggies Place received $20,000 while the other two groups each received $15,000.
"As the MLA also representing Salmon River I've worked hard in recent months to find a way to assist the Salmon River Hockey Society, which is another long-standing non-profit community organization," Zann said.
The money will be used for upgrades to Dueville's rink to help bring it up to date with the province's fire codes.
"Minor hockey players, other local groups, and the general public will be able to continue to use our legendary 'Hockeyville' rink as they have for the past 25 years or more," she said. "I'm grateful for the support of the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage since it is my belief that these types of organizations and facilities help our communities maintain both our unique Canadian culture and our rich heritage - in which hockey plays an important role."
Maggies Place executive director Linda Legere said the money for her facility will be used to make the centre more energy efficient to help with heating costs while also making more comfortable and welcoming for families.
"We are very pleased to have received this grant," she said.
"Not only will it help make our centre more energy efficient and help with our heating costs, it will also help make our centre more comfortable and welcoming for families."
