TRURO - Veteran Colchester County councillor Bill Masters will serve as deputy mayor after being elected by the municipality's new council Thursday night.
Masters was elected to the position shortly after the official swearing in of Colchester's five newly elected councillors.
Former deputy mayor Ron Cavanaugh was the only other nominee for the position.
"I certainly didn't put my name in for any great need for change," Masters said. "I thought this might be my last opportunity, and no reflection on the job our deputy mayor has done."
The deputy mayor's position is a two-year term.
Coun. Mike Cooper was elected alternate council committee chairman.
The deputy mayor sits in the mayor's chair during council committee meetings every other session. The alternate fills in for the deputy mayor in his absence.
The new councillors are Mike Gregory, Doug MacInnes, Wade Parker, Geoff Stewart and Lloyd Gibbs.
