AMHERST – An assault posted on Facebook has resulted in two Amherst teens coming under police scrutiny.

The two alleged assailants and the lone victim are students at Amherst Regional High School. All three are 15-year old males. Chignecto-Central Regional School Board spokeswoman Debbie Buott-Matheson said the assault did not take place on school grounds (although the Amherst Police Department confirmed it happened in Amherst).

“Situations like this have to be taken seriously,” said the spokeswoman.

The principal of the school, Pamela Hoare, was made aware of the video Thursday morning. After seeing the video, the principal alerted police, Buott-Matheson said.

Disciplinary action from the school is a possibility when actions take place off school grounds during school hours, said Buott-Matheson, depending on the circumstances. An investigation by the board has been opened.

The alleged assailants may face more serious consequences.

“We are investigating it,” said Deputy Chief Ian Naylor of the Amherst Police Department.

Police confirmed two teenagers were interviewed and charges are pending. The two alleged attackers were recognized by police from the video, according to Naylor. The high school also assisted with identification.

Witnesses to the assault can be seen on-camera in the video, according to the authorities. Police said the victim’s injuries from the attack were minimal; he was seen by a doctor and released.

    bullying begins at home
    - October 22, 2012 at 14:30:57

Being a child of an abusive home....gives that child a choice. It's called the FLIGHT OR FIGHT response. That child's mind chooses for them. I came under the FLIGHT category where I hid from danger and confrontation. The...FIGHT category I've seen in other people, through out my life. Throw adolescence in the mix and which way is that child going to react?? Bullying does begin at home. Parents need to be responsible for PROPER nurturing of their children. If those parents don't now how ...... then what????? OH.....and yes, I got bullied at school 30 plus years ago. I choose NOT to watch that disgusting video.

I did not watch the video and feel that those who did only perpetuate the sensationalism of it all. Whoever took video and posted this wanted to make a spectacle of this horrible act and by watching it people are serving that purpose. Yes, I understand that people are curious but being a parent of a 15 year old boy I dont think I could watch it as I dont think my stomach or heart could handle it. One good thing that came of the video is that it is now evidence of the assault. However it wont make much difference as our Youth Criminal Justice Act is even worse than our overall justice system and these kids will get a slap on the wrist. The parents likely won't do anything, hence why their children are bullies in the first place. Parents are the first teachers of many things and a family is a childs first relationship with other human beings. Bullying begins at home and until people realize this and deal with the real source of the problem, it is isnt going anywhere. Maybe parents should start being held accountable for their children's behaviour. If this were the case, perhaps some would invest more time and energy into raising their children up to be kind, caring and productive citizens of our society.

I live down the street from the school, and over the years..i dont know how many people ive seen get beat up....its so sad how these things are happening. I went out of the house, and the kids still didnt care what I was saying. Kids these days have no respect for ANYONE...expecially their peers. Im afraid for the future!!

to the person who said that kids today are no different than kids of latter years this is no reason to condone their actions. We definitely need to take what is happening seriously and have more severe consequences for their actions. They do these things knowing that nothing will happen to them it's time to make them responsible.

    IT IS WHAT IT IS

We all know that nothing severe is going to happen to the attackers at all. The town police can say they will punish them but we know that's BS. We'd be lucky to see 6 months probation and community service for them and that isn't going to happen either. The kids will be suspended from school, show-off their video and laugh, their parents won't have any consequences for them now because there are adults messaging the attackers threatening them and the parents will be on defence for their kids so punishment will never happen. In the end, the only people who might get punished are going to be the adults who are messaging the attackers...... PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Advocate bullying all you want .... nothing will change. Bullying comes from parenting or lack of and by the choices kids make which still stems back to parenting. If it were my choice (and have it be like when I was a kid), the only punishment given would be to the second kid who jumped in and made it an unfair fight and especially the kid who took the video AND posted it (that's like ratting on someone). Two wrongs don't make a right, but we all remember when it was eye for an eye.... hence the quote,"Payback is a bitch'. Wear your tshirts, make your FB status say anti-bullying, NOTHING will stop bullying.....EVER. That's the reality of it. The victim of this, will probably have a harder time at school now that he has to face the laughing by students, the pointing and let's not forget 'the video' ... you all know how it's going to be now. It's going to be WORSE for the victim emotionally. In todays new 'no spanking' society, the attackers and the videographer and any other spotted and identifiable persons in the video SHOULD be punished for participating (in agreement with their parents). Put a BRIGHT tshirt on them quoting " I AM A BULLY' and have them do some community service with it on PUBLICLY VISIBLE so people know ...... lol, we all know what should happen but hey, this is Amherst, it'll be forgotten about in a week..... It is what it is.

Jason, your comment...."You know if I recall my youth if I had a camera at the time...some of the most respectable people in amherst would be called out as bullies and/or sexists pigs....and some even worse... This sort of thing happens all the time...." Jason, Jason Jason....as your mother would say or should have said.....by your comments you either have a connection to the alleged assailants or you are of this generation and may possibly have been a bully yourself at one time or another. Two picking on one is s mismatch regardless it they are girls, boys, women or men period. Those odds are wrong and no justification by you or anyone whatsoever can make it right. So by clouding this single issue with it statement it happened in the 50's. 60's or 70's is just a smokescreen....Jason, two wrongs don't make a right. The fact that it is now being reported is a step in the right direction and shows our society is on the right track. However schools need to play a bigger role in the ramifications of what happens when bullying is allowed to fester and grow in our community. We need to show and tell more about the impact bullying is having on young people and their actions and self harm...just read the news and you will see I'm right. .

Alleged assailants may face more serious consequences? Like what a youth charge for assault? You know if I recall my youth if I had a camera at the time...some of the most respectable people in amherst would be called out as bullies and/or sexists pigs....and some even worse... This sort of thing happens all the time...we don't see it..it doesn't exist...and when we do see it we act all surprised...oh wow kids today they suck...whatever..kids today are no different than at any other period...

The victim's physical injuries may be minimal but I'm sure this isn't something he's going to forget anytime soon... why is it that we as society condone and sensationalize fighting? I'll never get it...
