NEW GLASGOW – A woman swimming naked the in East River was rescued by New Glasgow firefighters and police Thursday afternoon. A 911 call came into police around 1:30 p.m. that a woman was swimming naked in the river and looked like she was in distress.

Two firefighters swam out to the woman and used a tow line to be pulled in. The firefighters were assisted by local businessman Jamie Davidson who was quick on the scene with a boat from his marina.

Once the woman was removed from the water, she was transported to the Aberdeen Hospital by ambulance.  She was arrested under the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act for her own protection so she could be assessed at the hospital.

Seriously, you people saying the men are 'gawking' are ridiculous. They are doing their job and they are NOT gawking at the woman in the picture!! If they were really that desperate to look at a naked body then they most likely do it in the privacy of their own home lol. Get real. & there is nothing wrong with the photo. They aren't doing anything wrong with showing that photo. We don't live in the 1940s where it's horrifying to see a women's back. Get over it!

As the comments flow, it is to be noted that anything is news in a small town. I am sure they find it hard to come up with anything interesting to fill their pages. I have noted that the quality of reporting is not very sophisticated and poorly written. However, the commentors on these sites should not comment if they can't deliver better. The reponses given are filled with spelling and grammatical errors lessening their validity in my opinion. The issue of whether or not she was under the influence or a mental patient is yet to be determined and becomes an issue until after they rescue her.

Everyone has a right to their opinion on wether the photo should of been in the paper and the reporter has to make a decision on wether to print it or not, knowing that some will want to see while others will be offended. I just want to commend the New Glasgow Fire and Rescue on a quick and successfull response. That lady was very lucky that there were members of the cold water rescue so close by when the call came in.and in response to the swimming lessons, those survival suits may make you float like a duck but they don't let you swim like a fish...

You people obviously need to get over yourselves. It is a news story posted on a news paper's website.....and as in most news stories there are pics. Where you all live ......A CAVE?? I hope the girl gets some help with whatever it was. I would suggest tho, that she was likely high on something.

So sad folks around here are so bent over this. Meanwhile, some guy in a Maserati, apparently flying around town for some time, nails another vehicle, impaired at 11 am, no name, no comments and the article seems dormant. Wake up folks that could've been your kids or your parents walking across the street.

It's great everyone is so concerned about this person. Now if everyone could also voice their opinion just as loudly when it comes to matters of corruption, the government messing things up, the light sentences that are given to criminals and child molesters, etc., then maybe things will change. But when those stories are in the paper there is quite often little to no comments. Why is that?

Most ppl go skinny dipping after dark. Brave women to do it in the day light. Maybe her bikini slid off after she jumped in. Or somebody threw her in the drink, naked. Anyone from the local area knows not to swim in the East River. It is so polluted your skin might peel off.

Wow..i cant believe some of these comments, and it really bothers me that people are saying if she didnt want her naked picture posted she shouldnt have jumped in the river...really!! we have no idea what possessed her to do this, it could be a number of reasons. she very well could be mentally ill or it may have been drugs or escaping a dangerous situation. I think the rescuers did a great job and responded quickly and the reason there was so many around her wasnt to gawk and stare but to protect her from being gawked and stared at by the public.Wait for the facts and stop with the assumptions.

Are there more pictures I'm not seeing? People are saying The News shouldn't post naked pics of this chick yet I don't see any naked pics. The pics I do see don't show anything. Can't even see her face. I don't think they could have done a better job protecting her privacy. The yoga pants women wear these days reveal more than this story does. Get a grip people! Geeez.

Drug addiction IS a mental illness. Now, at this point the facts are unclear, but her actions clearly demonstrate she was not in a healthy state of mind, regardless of whether she was using drugs or not. To be clear, I am in no way condoning drug use or abuse in any way, but imagine if that were your daughter or sister or friend. Would you really want pictures of her naked (yes, you can't see anything, but she is still obviously naked in the photos) for everyone to see? Also, my issue is not with the story itself. New Glasgow is a small town, where nothing happens, and someone making the stupid decision to jump in the East River, naked, is no doubt all anyone will be talking about for the next week. Especially so, since the News chronically fails to report on current events or meaningful news, instead favouring the style of a trashy tabloid. And Shannon, I called the News to express my disgust when the News ran the stories on the homeless man, which I also found incredibly distasteful and disrespectful.

I somewhat agree that the news might have been a little over the top,but that's there job.You can't point fingers at the news paper when it seem like there are more and more disturbing things happening here in our county. Also as for the comments about the rescuers, they had no idea what they were responding to.There is likely a lot more to the story then you could even image.I wish the girl finds the help she needs, and to the responders, good job on retrieving the girl.

    Conclusion
    - October 18, 2012 at 16:47:50

After reading the comments I have come to the conclusion that people either have compassion and understanding, and perhaps a bit of empathy.... or they do not. Of COURSE the news can report this story and post photos.... but the question isn't CAN they, but rather SHOULD they, especially after they found out this woman may be mentally ill. Does the public really NEED to see photos of this woman.... wouldn't the story be enough? It's the same thing when people slow down to stare at an accident out of morbid curiosity. Most people may not know or recognise this woman from the photos, but I bet someone out there does have a good idea who she is and this photo has enough detail for them to confirm it.... and in a county like this it will soon spread. People do not have the right to privacy in public, this is true, but given the circumstances in this case the Evening News should have been professional enough to grant some to this woman anyway.

I see a girl wrapped in a blanket being carried to an ambulance, it was apparent she was in distress, but the article didn't state that she suffered from a Mental illness, only that "She was arrested under the Mental Health Act for her own protection, so she could be assessed at the hospital." IMO the News only stated the facts, and until she is assessed, no one can say why she was in that river, Thank God they got to her in time, I would be more upset seeing a picture of them carrying a body bag.

I agree with the post that stated that when the woman went in the river naked...she pretty much forfeited her rights to privacy. Perhaps when the homeless man was sleeping on the streets a few months back the news ought to have refrained from printing photos of him to save his pride/privacy. It's news people, get over it. As for the coments about ALLL those men there staring at the naked woman as if they had never seen one...grow up! If it were me or my sons or daughters or sisters or mother...I should HOPE that many people would show up to help! They were not there to stare at a naked body. Believe it or not, our emergency workers have cooth and dignity. For the love of God have some sense. Sorry but in an emergency, privacy goes out the window. Saving life is priority, not covering body parts so public reading the news will not be embarrassed. The news is not shaming the mentally ill, noone said the woman was mentally ill, only that they arrested her under the mental health act. Any shame in this was brought on by the woman herself, and if she didn't intend consciously to go into the river naked, I'm sure once in sound mind...she will appreciate and be thankful for our emergency workers and/or volunteers. To reiterate: more can be seen of ones body in beach photos, or simply walking around town on a summer day. It's you people whining that are sick in the head. The first thing you saw here was not a life saved or hypothermia prevented...it was a naked woman. Grow up.

I commend these people and the business man for helping this young lady out of the water and taking her to get treatment. If it weren't for these people quick reaction, who knows what might have happened! So, grow up people and read the story for what it is and stop making an issue out of it!!

If the Evening News is willing to print a picture of something like this, but keep the names of diddlers quiet, (they say to protect the families of everyone involved), they do it to protect the diddlers, and if all this doesn't prove the justice system is crooked, then nothing will, show some actual respect, if it was someone related to a cop or someone that was related to someone in the news, they wouldn't have put the pic up. try posting the names of NARKS and crooked cops.

For all those who are smashing the News for writing and displaying the picture. It is news, you don't get to decide what the news is. You do decide if you want to read it though. So if you don't want to see the picture or read about it, don't. but let the rest of us who do read the news, read. You want the picture of the child molester before he/she is convicted of anything, how does that affect his/her life if found not guilty? I saw the picture, I couldn't tell if it was my sister or a woman I don't know. You want to find the freaks, I wonder how many were down there with their phone recording the rescue of a NAKED woman. Have you check YouTube lately, and if you do remember not to look at the NAKED woman.

After reading all these ridiculous comments saying that The News had no right to post these pictures, I HAVE to comment. First of all, this is a new story, so pictures pertaining to the story are in every way appropriate, secondly, there is no part of this woman's body showing in any of these pictures that wouldn't be showing if she were wearing, say a summer dress or a low backed tank top, thirdly, if this woman hadn't taken off her own clothing and jumped into the East River, there would never have been a reason for these pictures to exist. Really, if this article were about me, I would be much more embarrassed and humiliated with myself for being foolish enough to jump into the East River, with no clothes on than I would be for The News posting an article, along with pictures about what I had done. Leave it to Pictou County folk to get angry at The News, for writing the news....

The issue here isn't the picture itself but rather what it's depicting. Children, youth, seniors, persons who have mental health issues, etc all need protection and as a society we are the ones who should be providing it. A person with mental health issues is (possibly) not in control of their faculties and as such, requires protection as opposed to exploitation. Reporting the story is one thing but posting a picture is another. In this case the picture really doesn't add anything. As a side note, there is no such thing as the Mental Health Act in Nova Scotia and hasn't been for a number of years so hopefully she wasn't actually arrested based on that statute. The New Glasgow Regional Police Service might want to look up the Nova Scotia Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act and review their powers/responsibilities.

True, nobody has the right to privacy while in public, however, if you were sitting on a park bench picking your nose would you want it published in the news for all to see. A bit of common sense and general respect should be exercised by so-called professional reporters in sensitive cases like this.

      Gawking?

I don't see anyone gawking in the photo.... more likely they are surrounding her to protect her privacy and/or cut down on wind chill.... she did just come out of cold water.

All I can say is BRRRRRRRRRR. Although the photos don't identify this woman they should have at least blurred out her head to help protect her privacy from those who may know and recognize her. Lots of people have issues, I see no need to publicize them in a manner that could potentially follow them around the rest of their life. A job well done by fire fighters and police though, so hat's off to them. Hope this woman is ok and gets the help she needs.

Wow. The News never fails to amaze me with its callous disregard for the residents of Pictou County. Nice job posting a picture of a NAKED and MENTALLY ILL woman for all to gawk at. I can't wait until you get slapped with a lawsuit for one of your stunts. It's bound to happen with the stories you have been 'reporting' the last few years. Why don't you try printing a paper than doesn't exploit individuals (the pattern seems to be those struggling with mental illness unable to stand up for themselves), and stomping all over their rights. Investing in spell check couldn't hurt either.

Thank you, Amanda. There is no need to take a photo of this woman in her current state. Have some decency NG News! Or should you be called the New Glasgow Enquirer? You're sickening!

It's called journalism, freedom of press. Photos like these are taken all over the world. Not just the NG news. Haters gotta hate i guess.
