TRURO - Mayoral candidates Bill Mills and Keltie Jones will square off in a debate tonight, just two days before voting begins for the municipal election.

The debate will take place at the Nova Scotia Community College, Truro campus, from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

There is no access to seating to watch the debate at the NSCC. However, it will be broadcast live online and can also be seen via the video post the Truro and District Chamber of Commerce's website once the debate has ended. The chamber of commerce is hosting the event, which will be moderated by Mandy Wood of Cat Country/Big Dog.

Questions that will be posed to the candidates came from chamber of commerce members and community residents that were submitted to the chamber of commerce earlier this month.

For more details on the live stream or video post, log onto www.trurochamber.com and click on the mayor's debate story.

Voting for the municipal election begins Thursday at noon and continues until 7 p.m. on Oct. 20.

Jeff Johnston, after watching the debate I fail to see where you came up with the "My Legacy" analogy for Keltie. Not once did she suggest recklessly spending millions on projects no one wants, and she was right on in her understanding of what's wrong with government, too much talk followed by no action. Mr Mills was the only one trying to validate himself, by listing all his experience with all the various committees, on issues that still have not been resolved many years later. Yes, issues need to be discussed thoroughly, with all options explored, but then there needs to be action. Truro is where it is today because no one has provided the type of leadership necessary to get issues resolved and move the town forward towards a brighter future. Hopefully the people of Truro will make informed decisions about which candidate they vote for, as their future will depend on the action or inaction of those selected.

Hey Mr. Truth Squad , you obviously don't understand what's wrong with government either . You think the problem is "too much talk followed by no action" , it's the opposite that's true . The government has wrecked the town by taking action after action after action , going on spending sprees , with no respect for anyone else . 20 million on the Downtown Master Plan , 50 million on the civic center . Shutting down our recreational facilities , bringing in electronic voting so elections can be fixed , while shutting the public out of the debates . Why should local businesses pay all this tax for a civic center that is out by the Walmart ? No wonder they had to close . They needed to sell their real estate while it was still worth something . Why should local businesses with trade and convention space pay all this tax to the town so they can compete with them at the civic center with their own convention space ? Bureaucrats give themselves fat checks for this and take no risk . Why should taxi companies pay tax to the town for them to set up a transit system ? The taxi's already go anywhere 24/7 . The transit system would have very limited routes and schedules but could cause taxi companies to have to shut down , just like Acadia Lines . We don't need more spending sprees . We're just going to bury ourselves higher and deeper . Enough with the change , fresh approaches , creative solutions these are just Buzz words . Keltie Jones and Kenda Maclellan look like they just walked off of the Oprah Winfrey show .

Keltie showed no understanding on what's been going wrong with government over the last 4 years . She's another one of these "My Legacy" people looking to spend millions more on projects no one wants while raising taxes . We don't need a transit system or biking lanes . The sidewalks are the safest place to bike . As soon as biking lanes go in there will probably be by-law enforcers expecting you to drive on them , and the road rather then the sidewalks . This will result in many deaths . There have been many deaths in this town from pedestrians being struck by cars .Most of these are not publicized . We are not a big city with congestion issues on the sidewalks . All these public transit / bike lane people are the global warming freaks that think carbon dioxide that plants breath is somehow a deadly poison . They want to spend millions on their transit system to validate themselves . Never mind the economic hardship a lot of people are facing , the high taxes , the business closures , everyone step aside the well off middle class want to spend millions to validate themselves . Again . Worship the creator not the creation .

Be that as it may, you are aware that cycling on the sidewalk is illegal, correct? It's incredibly hazardous to pedestrians and police downtown will tell you to get on the road. Furthermore, public transit isn't always about staying "green"; there are plenty of people without other means of transport in Truro. I left NSAC due to the sheer lack of convenience of getting around Truro and transferred to a university in the GHR. Also, CO2 is an asphyxiant to animals. Plant cells and animal cells function totally differently. To receive any benefit from CO2 in its gaseous state you're going to need to be able to photosynthesize for starters...

Hey Mr. E , that's got tp be the dumbest comment I've ever heard . You claim it's "incredibly hazardous to pedestrians" to bike on the sidewalk ? No it's not . It's 1000's of times more dangerous biking on the roads which are full of cars and lots of drivers that are not paying attention , whereas the sidewalks are practically empty most of the time . I've lived here my whole life , I've always biked on the sidewalk , and never once have the police told me to get on the road . It's common sense . And as far as carbon dioxide is concerned , if you think carbon , which is a building block of life , is somehow a deadly poison , I don't have enough room on this blog to explain to you just how brainwashed you are . Remember that 80% of people will sign a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide , which is water . And of course all the so called experts and professionals that think it's totally normal to push cocktails of toxic psychiatric drugs on children . Are you going to take the Mark of the Beast when they tell you how great it is ?

In reality over the earths period of history, the earth has heated up many times and always cools down causing a ice age. We have just sped up the process, the CO2 in the atmosphere has increased causing the world to heat up, but it will decrease in a few million years like it has before causing another ice age.

I'm female and you're thinking about hazards to the biker rather than the pedestrian. Most cities, including Truro, have a bylaw requiring cyclists to avoid the sidewalk as an experienced cyclist can reach speeds up to 35km/h, which poses a danger to people using the sidewalk for walking. Carbon dioxide =/= carbon. That's like saying it's okay to drink hydrogen peroxide because it "contains" H2O. You are clearly an uneducated bible thumper or a troll and either way your way of thinking is going out of style fast, so I'd suggest being a little less vocal in the future.

I couldn't agree more JJR. I had to stop watching the online debate because I was tired of having an advertisement pop up ever couple minutes. I couldn't believe it. Is it really that hard to set up a few chairs in a gymnasium and give members of the community a chance to come together and actually engage in some kind of public dialogue? Public dialogue creates social capital and we know that social capital increases voter participation. Sadly though, we are shooting ourselves in the foot. We are closing our local recreational facilities, local businesses are closing, we're closing our polling stations and holding our debates online where viewers are bombarded with advertisements. No wonder we're facing a democratic deficit. I would be willing to wager that voter turnout this time around won't be much higher than last. If the Town really wanted to engage voters, they should hold some town hall meetings, organize some real debates and allow people to ask questions in person. Isn't that what democracy is all about?

I just read and heard that the debate is not open to the public. That is simply ridiculous; your voting public, your taxpayers, are not allowed to access the debates to ask questions because the candidates are afraid of "hecklers" or being asked the "difficult" questions. A moderator should be able to control the audience. The voters/taxpayers should be allowed to attend the debate and ask questions. Not allowing access is disrespectful and therefore neither candidate deserves my vote or your's for that matter. What has happened to democracy within our society?
