MRI magnet arrives at new hospital site

The magnet for the new wide bore MRI being installed at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre arrived on site on Wednesday and was unloaded on Thursday. The magnet weighs more than 12,000 pounds.

TRURO - The main component of a new MRI being installed at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre arrived on site on Wednesday before being unloaded from the flatbed truck Thursday morning.

It took roughly half an hour for the magnet, which weighs 12,000 pounds, to be lifted off the truck by the use of a crane.

It then took almost three hours for crews to transport the crane down the hallway in the centre to the room where the unit will be installed before the end of the month.

The MRI is expected to be operational during the new centre's first day of operations on Nov. 26.

MRIs are much safer than CT scans and all the cancer-causing radiation they expose you to. If your doctor suggests a CT or CAT scan, ask him or her if a MRI would work instead.
