TRURO - Colchester County council is considering offering double the amount of funding requested for a community rink and multipurpose site.

Last month, the Five Islands Athletic Association asked council for $5,000 for the completion of an outdoor rink and multipurpose area in that community. At Thursday night's committee meeting, Coun. Tom Taggart suggested $10,000 be given for the project.

"People in that community will have difficulty making use of the (new) civic centre (in Truro). I think we should give it to them," Taggart said.

The projected cost of the site is more than $103,700, with a funding shortfall of $11,000.

Council said the project is a focal point for the community and volunteer efforts connected to it are impressive.

The motion will formally be voted on at the end of the month regular council meeting. If granted, the funds would be provided from the county-based Bass River House Fund, which has a current balance of $28,000 in the fund.
