TRURO - A Truro town councillor insists the new civic centre in Truro will serve all residents and is on par with its original development plan.

Coun. Greg MacArthur spoke about the Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre during the town's regular monthly meeting on Tuesday afternoon. He said there have been misconceptions in the community that some of the aspects of the centre, specifically the pool size, are not what was first agreed upon.

"People have said the pool is three inches short. It's not. It's an Olympic size pool ... we didn't spend millions of dollars to not" do it right, MacArthur said.

He added the centre will be appropriate for the entire community.

"This is not to be a detriment to the Debert (and) Truro rinks. This is to add extra ice time for people and this centre is for the average person and the community and there will not be large prices" to use it, MacArthur said.

The councillor added it's time the community shows its excitement over the project.

"I think people should get excited about the civic centre. This is the centre that will turn things around," with its physical, social and healthy-living aspects, MacArthur said.

He also indicated there should be hockey in the facility by the end of November and a grand opening possibly in January.

Please get your facts straight Mr. MacArthur - this is not an Olympic sized pool, it should be, but it is not. It is regulation 25 meters, Olympic sized needs to be 50 meters.

I have my doubts that membership pricing is even known, or finalized yet.
