STEWIACKE - A fire that ripped through an apartment building and laundromat in Stewiacke on the weekend is under investigation.
The fire began in the Main Street building after 11 p.m. Saturday and took about six hours and at least 60 firefighters from Stewiacke, Hilden, Brookfield, Shubenacadie, Elmsdale and Lantz to fight.
Mark Crozier, deputy chief of the Stewiacke and District Fire Department, said there were tenants in five of the six apartments and everyone, including animals, got out safely. Crozier described the building to be "a writeoff" with the "majority of fire damage on the top and smoke and water damage to the rest."
The cause of the blaze hasn't been confirmed but is suspected to be electrical.
