TRURO - Despite the fact there's been a lack of movement this summer in finding a new library for Truro residents, municipal officials say it shouldn't be too much longer.

The Town of Truro's CAO Jim Langille told the Truro Daily News on Wednesday that not much has been done regarding the library situation during the summer.

"There's been somewhat of a delay because there's a need for (the town and county) to work on a joint committee and it's very difficult to get all the parties together in July and August," Langille said.

Langille expects more action will soon be taken. A joint library committee with town and county officials are working towards creating a memorandum of association, which would indicate "how much the municipality and the town would provide" for a new library.

Although early in the process, Langille believes the operational costs would be shared 50/50 while the construction costs would be a 60/40 split with the county paying the larger portion.

Langille said the intent is for the county and town to have a joint meeting in early September and make a recommendation to the October council meetings. Then a request for proposals would go out to the public.

County Mayor Bob Taylor has told this paper it's likely the request for proposals could come in "pretty quick."

Taylor added the public and interested parties can voice their opinion on the library's new location but he reminded people the decision ultimately belongs to the municipal government. That decision, Taylor said, should not take much longer.

"I'm pretty sure a decision will be made by the fall. I think it's a priority," said Taylor.

And real physical books also don't need batteries. I stare at a computer screen all day. It's a relief to read something at night that isn't glowing at me. Sorry, some of us still prefer actual books to e-books. Nothing like the pleasure of a good browse in the stacks.

The Provincial Normal School property does not make the most sense. The cost to make the building safe, and suitable for what the library needs would be astronomical.

The Provincial Normal School property makes the most sense. It's a very historic building and central to the town which is central to the county, right beside the museum and the farmers market (old fire station). Please re-purpose this building and fix it up into a new state of the art library. Then tear the old one down and properly landscape the entire front lawns of the police station and Normal School properties similar to the Halifax public gardens. Make the cenotaph the focal point and bring honour to the veterans who have given their lives for our freedom.

Ray McLennan - if "literally everything you need including books is available online" why were you borrowing books from the library? Perhaps it was because you can do so free of charge, whereas there is usually a charge involved in accessing anything copyrighted online? Also, the library no longer stamps books with the return date when they are borrowed, so you can't tell when any book was last borrowed.

A new Library??? The library we have in Truro is not used to capacity and Library around the world have been dwindling because literally everything you need including book is available online. My children and I checked our some books a few weeks ago and many had not be taken out since the 1990's. Funding a new library is like investing money in Black and White television!
