FIVE ISLANDS – Two women who got trapped on a sandbar while out for a walk in the Black Rock area of Five Islands Tuesday afternoon have been safely rescued.

“I know everybody is safe and sound,” said Corporal Addie MacCallum of the Bible Hill RCMP detachment.

Emergency units we’re dispatched at approximately 3 p.m. after a mother, 83, and daughter, 48, of Etobicoke, Ont., became stranded on a sandbar while walking along the Bay of Fundy after the tide moved in on them.

Two children, aged 13 and 11, who were with the women, swam safely back to shore.

Members from the Five Island and District Fire Department and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax responded to the call.

MacCallum said both women were later brought to shore without injuries.
