TRUR0 - A new component to next year's Heartland Tour is a "family heroes program," which is aimed at getting more people involved in physical activities.
"Anyone interested as a family can apply online as a heartland heroes family," Dr. Nicholas Giacomantonio, a cardiologist with the QE II Health Science Centre in Halifax told a crowd gathered at Victoria Park, during a stopover by the Heartland Tour group Tuesday afternoon.
Each family that participates in the program will be required to set goals to achieve throughout the year.
"And our job will be to help them reach those goals," Giacomantonio said, whether that be by cycling the last leg into Truro with next year's tour or some other form of physical activity.
"The carrot, besides the benefit of health, to the family (in each community) that achieves those goals, will win bicycles (up to five per family)," he said.
"But it's not just a day in July. It's all year round and all forms of physical activity."
Furthermore, from a province-wide perspective, the family that sets the most goals and achieves them will also win a cash prize - possibly $1,000, Giacomantonio said.
