TRURO - At least one worthy individual within Colchester County is likely to be a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
The commemorative medal has been created by the Canadian government to mark the 2012 celebrations of the Queen's 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne.
Throughout the year, 60,000 Canadians will be recognized. Of those, 4,000 medals are available to municipalities to honour their citizens.
Cumberland Colchester Musquodoboit Valley MP Scott Armstrong has 30 medals to be awarded throughout the riding and he is attempting to ensure that one eligible person from each riding becomes a recipient.
To be eligible, a person much be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, without necessarily residing in Canada.
They must have made a significant contribution to a particular province, territory, region or community within Canada or an achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada. The person must also have been alive on Feb. 6, 2012, the 60th anniversary date of the Queen's accession.
A selection committee for local nominees is being co-ordinated by the municipality's recreation department. Councillors Tom Taggart and Earl McKenna were both named as council's representatives to the committee.
