TRURO - New sidewalks will be constructed on both sides of Highway 102 to coincide with the roundabout planned for Robie Street.

Colchester County council committee made the decision this week after being asked by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, which is putting in the roundabout, to give consideration to the needs of pedestrians and cyclists in the area

The municipality currently has two sidewalks on Robie Street that end at the Giant Tiger retail store on one side of the street and at Wendy's restaurant on the other.

The budget estimate for the sidewalk project is $500,000. However, it is anticipated the final cost could come in less than that amount if the project is tendered along with the larger, roundabout construction.

"We'll never get a (better) chance to do this," Mayor Bob Taylor said, of tying the sidewalks into the larger project.

Construction is expected to begin later this summer.
