TRURO - Colchester County should soon have a taxi bylaw similar to existing legislation in the Town of Truro.
County Mayor Bob Taylor said during this week's council meeting that the draft legislation is more than 90 per cent complete. Taylor said the taxi bylaw will essentially "mirror" that of Truro's.
"I believe this is something we have to do," Coun. Bob White said during discussion on the issue.
The legislation can't come quick enough for Layton's Taxi owner George MacDonald, who did not know the county legislation is in the works and who appeared before council to appeal for such a bylaw.
"It's very good to hear," MacDonald said. "My opinion in this area is that we should all be on the same playing field ... because it's gotten to the point now where you have absolutely no idea who is going to be under the wheel of a taxi."
MacDonald has expressed concerns in the past, because while taxi's that operate within the Town of Truro must be licensed and their drivers have to undergo police checks, no such requirements are currently in place for cabs that operate elsewhere in Colchester County.
"That's my major concern, that unlicensed taxis do not have checks on drivers," MacDonald said. "Needless to say, I feel very strongly about this."
