TRURO – Another long-established downtown business is closing its doors.

Quality furniture retailer M.P. Crowell Ltd., which has operated out of the same Prince Street location since the store’s opening on June 14, 1961, is planning to close within the next few months.

Steve Crowell, one of three owners along with brothers Randy and Mark, said they came to a decision over the Christmas holidays that the time had come to retire.

Mayor Bill Mills appeared stunned by the news when contacted by the Truro Daily News for reaction.

“You’re kidding,” he said. “Holy smokes – I’m glad I’m sitting down on (hearing) that one.”

Crowell said the decision was not related to any business concerns and despite rumours circulating that the company had been sold, that is not the case.

Crowell said no attempts have been made as yet to even advertise the business but the owners would be open to entertaining offers.

The store is expected to close by spring.

I no longer live in Truro, but I try to go home at least once a year. A few years ago I was really impressed with the growth and improvements I saw. The last time I was there was in Oct. 2011 and Margolians had announced there closing, which I thought was shocking. It's been there my whole life. In Feb. 2011, my sister and I bought tables for our Mom at MP Crowells. The service was fantastic, including free delivery at our convenience and removal of the old tables. It is depressing now to see the loss of these businesses that have been sort of landmarks in my home town.

Such thoughtful, intelligent commentary on the (5th?) business closure in the downtown area in just a few short months from Mayor Bill Mills. I'm still shaking my head at that part of this story. Sorry to see yet another business go.

They are dropping like flys! Another store local tax payers couldn't , or didn't , support. Wait til taxes go up when the civic center opens, you'll see a lot more downtown businesses give up. I don't know, 99% of the people can't buy anything more than the basic necessities right now and its only going to get worse. There use to be three classes, rich, middle class and poor. Now there is rich, poor and really poor. Pretty soon the only things downtown will be the banks, lots of hairdressers and barbers and the bald boys.

This is another big blow to downtown TRURO. 1 last draw for town ,this is crazy that these business are closing one after the other . With no furniture, clothing ,hardware and flowers /there is not alot of varitey to draw people downtown ,aleast MP Crowell is a fairly modern building to attract buyers . Here is hoping someone is interested in moving downtown ,maybe the town could buy it for their new libary
