TRURO - Nova Scotians have been doing a lot about energy efficiency, but ‘Silver' Donald Cameron has a few more ideas.
Cameron, an environmentalist, will be speaking here this weekend to help kick off two events - Cool Truro - Colchester's latest round of an energy efficiency contest, and Efficiency Nova Scotia's ‘Take Charge! Saving Money, Creating Jobs and Helping the Planet' tour.
"People have been looking at ways of energy efficiency, such as commuting less and doing more insulating in their homes," said Cameron, who will be at the Marigold Cultural Centre Saturday night at 7 p.m.
"The province has programs built on energy efficiency to give residents discounts and rebates."
During Cameron's talk, he said he'll first ask those in attendance to put their names on a sign-up sheet for an energy audit.
"An auditor goes into the home and the audit judges how effective the house is performing and how to improve on energy efficiency," he said.
Cameron said improvement techniques depend on the individual and their home.
"One of the interesting and actual wonderful things is that it's all individual. Each home is different from one to another," he said, adding the different things people need to work on could create additional green jobs.
For the past few years, residents and business owners have saved enough electricity to power 34,000 average homes, according to Efficiency Nova Scotia. Many people may not realize, however, the impact of their energy savings on the environment and the economy.
"Nova Scotians are naturally thrifty and resourceful," said Cameron. "For generations we've made the most of what's available to us. Being resourceful with energy is no different - but what we're seeing now is the huge potential not just for cutting our power and fuel bills, but also for driving a green economy and keeping Nova Scotia clean and beautiful."
Admission to the event, which will also feature local musician Charlie A'Court, is free.
