TRURO - Even when others shake their head and call him crazy, Donald Ferguson has learned to trust his instinct.

The Marigold Cultural Centre executive director said not all his decisions regarding bringing talent to the Truro stage is met with enthusiasm by co-workers and staff. For example, his decision to book Scotland-based group The Alexander Brothers not that long ago.

"They are in their 70s and the staff said, 'What are you doing?' But it was a sold-out show and people gathered in the lobby for hugs and kisses after the show," said Ferguson.

As the Marigold enters its sixth season, there’s a lot to celebrate and a few goals to make the centre even more successful. Ferguson said it costs about half a million dollars to run the centre for a year and revenue for the past year was about $450,000.

The intent, Ferguson said, is too get even more people into the centre for its various events.

"Once they walk through the door they'll be back and community feedback is huge," said Ferguson.

In fact, attendance has increased during the past two years by 30 per cent, said Ferguson. More than 14,000 tickets were sold last year compared to 9,000 the previous year.

"I attribute it to variety and more people are aware of us and know we are here to stay," he said.

There were 100 shows offered at the Marigold last year and 39 shows have already been confirmed for the upcoming season. Ferguson expects about 85 shows during the next year as more acts are booked, including new shows such as Murray McLaughlin, Allison Angelo, Pavlo, John McDermott and Ballet Jorgen.

"We have new performers who the Marigold is now top of mind for some agencies, especially Truro being the Hub town," said Ferguson. "The average audience age is 40 to 65 and we are trying to get all ages, kids and families. A lot of people think it's just music but there's theatre, comedy, one-act plays, lessons and programs for children ..."

A few other goals for the upcoming year include merging local performers with professionals and filling more seats, said Ferguson.

"We'd like to sell out every show."

Melanie Grant is overseeing sponsorship and membership with the Marigold. Part of attracting more people is increasing membership, she said. There are currently 350 members and the goal is to see at least 1,000.

"I'd like to reach out to more businesses," said Grant.

Ferguson and Grant agree a goal by the 10-year season is to "have sold-out shows on a continuous basis and a great member and corporate buy-in," said Ferguson, adding there's still a perception the Marigold is owned and operated by the business community. In actuality, it's a non-profit organization.

Just want to mention - the Alexander Bros. have been coming to the Truro area for many years - believe it was back in the 60's or 70's that we first saw their show here and every time it was a marvellous event. Thank you for again returning them to Truro and so pleased that there was a full house. I know I totally enjoyed it all.

The Marigold is a great venue and hopefully both the business community and residents will continue to increase their support.
