TRURO - Truro Sanitation Ltd., Colchester County's largest waste hauler, has been sold to Miller Waste of Ontario.

"We felt we had grown the company to as large as we could take it," said Bruce Casey, a senior manager with the Casey Group of Companies, which previously owned Truro Sanitation.

"There's a lot of consolidation in the industry so we felt that we were a very desirable company and we wanted to transition it to new owners while it was still very successful."

The sale became effective yesterday.

"They've said they are going to run it the same as it currently is," Casey said. "It is maintaining its own name, for now anyway, and it is going to continue on as Truro Sanitation."

He said the owner of Miller Waste Systems, which is headquartered in Markham, Ont., came down to meet with Truro Sanitation employees on Wednesday to address any concerns they might have about how the sale might impact on their futures.

Casey said the estimated 20 employees were assured "... that nothing would change, that wages or job security wouldn't change and that they want to run things the same way they are being run now."

Truro Sanitation is the waste hauler for Colchester County and the towns of Truro and Stewiacke.

The sale also includes Truro Sanitation's sister company, PBS Waste Services Ltd., the largest waste hauler in Cumberland County.

The deal also involves the transfer of ownership of more than 30 pieces of sanitation equipment (including trucks) and two construction and demolition landfill sites.

The Casey Group of Companies includes Casey Concrete Ltd., Scotia Hyundai, Amherst Auto (NAPA) and Scotia self-Storage. Casey Group is also partners in Casey-Metro Ltd., and BP Trading Ltd.

"We're going to continue to grow and we wanted to look at other opportunities and this was just one business that we felt was time to move on from it," Casey said.

The financial particulars of the sale were not disclosed and a regional official with Miller Waste declined comment on the deal.

Another company taken over by someone outside Nova Scotia. Things will not change right away but, they will change. More and more companies and businesses are being taken over by 'outside' sources. They all say the same thing,' nothing is going to change', ' things are going to be better', ' you won't even notice the difference'. They lie. I wish the employees of TSL all the best. Maybe, just maybe they will 'stay the same'.

Anyone who believes that good service and cost containment will continue under a company from Ontario is kidding themselves. The new company has issued all sorts of assurances but unless they are in writing, don't bet the farm on it.
