GAYS RIVER - Tests have confirmed that a popular roadside spring in Colchester County used for drinking water is unsafe to drink.

The Gays River Spring is located on Highway 224, about 300 metres southeast of Cooks Mills Road, between the communities of Pine Grove and Gays River.

Tests conducted by the Department of Environment have found bacteria and elevated nitrate levels in the water.

The presence of total coliform bacteria indicates that other harmful pathogens may be in the water. Tests also show E-coli bacteria that indicate recent fecal contamination. Both are commonly associated with gastrointestinal problems.

If water containing bacteria is swallowed, symptoms may include stomach ache, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. Elevated nitrate levels may pose a health risk to infants and are associated with Blue Baby Syndrome.

Boiling the water is not a treatment option since it increases nitrate concentration.

The Gays River Spring is not a registered public drinking water supply. Roadside springs are not routinely tested or monitored.

To avoid illness, Nova Scotians should not drink water from a source other than the local municipal water supply or a private well that is regularly tested and meets Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines.
