MLA expenses add up to about $15,000

TRURO - Colchester County's three MLAs expenses for July totalled more than $15,000.

The figures are contained in monthly reports that can be found on the provincial government's website.

The highest claim was by Colchester North's Karen Casey at $6,409.88.

It included $4,266.54 in constituency expenses, $1,470 in living expenses, $222.87 in postage and travel and $450 in other travel.

The first category included $980 in office rent, $100 for a hall rental, $500 in insurance, $1,100 in advertising, $330 for a Bell bundle, $695 for toner and $320 for constituency assistant services.

It is important to note that the amount MLAs expenses vary from month to month depending on when the expenses come in. It creates a system where there can be a large difference between what MLAs expenses are on a monthly basis.

By comparison, Truro-Bible Hill MLA Lenore Zann's expenses were the lowest among the three Colchester representatives at $3,722.03.

It included $1,275 for living expenses and $2,447.03 in constituency expenses. The latter figure included $869.56 in office rent and the rest in payroll.

Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley MLA Gary Burrill's expenses totalled $5,658.10.

It included $771,97 in postage and travel, $539.19 in other travel, including $349.77 for a multiple-night stay at a hotel for a caucus event, and $4,346.94 in constituency expenses.

The final category included $890 in payroll, $104 for constituency assistant services, $1,327 for a newsletter, $600 for office rent, $344 for a Bell bundle, $158 for toner, $295 for electricity and $300 in advertising and the remainder in office charges.
